life is short and full of grief and pain, but crueler than the pain is the hope and love, of which this life is equally full. and so we suffer onward, constantly searching, constantly yearning. but even through a misery that is known definitively to be insurmountable, we cling desperately to fistfuls of dirt to stay grounded here in this life, clutching the love and warmth given to us by those who share in our lives and gripping it tightly. pining hungrily for something greater, knowing deep down that nothing is to be found; the mitigation of pain becomes the highest prize. with tears in their eyes the bravest among us open their fists and give freely what little hope is left, warming this existence for the rest of our pitiful souls as best as they can before they must depart. in their honor we are obliged to do the same.
